THE “ABSORBER”
Caleb being affected by Dio’s power has to worship him. Dio sends messages to Caleb and he absorbs, assimilates and attaches the information into his mind. Furthermore, he is brainwashed by Dio’s speech, and his personality is similar to a radio, taking up and receiving by technical action. The humans’ brain receives and analyzes information. Focusing on the head as body part, “Absorber” is a radio-like helmet that gathers adjustable radio waves.

INNER PERCEPTION
How Dionysus can have such a big influence on people? How does he take the commands of Louisa’s body? This device not only allows Dionysus to see through people’s mind but it also allows body transfer so Dionysus can control people’s behavior and the course of any events from someone else’s body.

CHAOS
Invade the body, invade the space
Dio embodies a destructive chaos, which give birth to a new beginning. What happen when dionysiac frenzy takes over people dragging them into madness? The disorder gets the upper hand. The aim of the project is to explore how bodies can cohabit, invade, fill, empty and interact with communal space.

THE ALTERED ARM
Here, the way Dionysus spreads his control on people was perceived as an infection. And in order to infect people he had to be infected himself. So this infection is taking the form of a distorted skin represented by an organic plastic shape wrapped in a latex outfit that stands for the lust and masochism of the god.
Project 1a : costume design
BRIEF
In pairs or individually you’ll be given a character from the Bacchae and a body part (head and shoulder/left arm/right arm/torso/left leg/right leg) to design, make and document a costume for. Choose one aspect of your character to represent in your costume, this could be an emotion, architecture, conversation, particular relationship or material quality. Think about how your costume will hinder, exaggerate or suppress the movement of your character and how it might define the space that their body inhabits on the stage or in the space. Utilise different techniques for making (moulding, sewing, casting, etc) and think about how your costume will fit the body. Does it fit snugly, hang loosely or change as the play unfolds? Alongside the physical construction we will ask you to document your costume photographically or using film or video, choosing carefully which material surroundings, light and level of detail to document the work.
Live project at the Yard Theatre commissioned by Jay Miller in response to the lack of theatre space available for young directors to show new and challenging work.
